“Glued my to my hand!”
Despite the intensity of their love, Jon’s and Richard’s relationship was a volatile one—so much so that domestic violence and other criminal behavior sent Richard to jail. When Jon finds out his former husband may have escaped from prison, the quiet life he’s since created in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts—with his new boyfriend and daughter—shatters.
>>>> Here’s what other readers are saying about Painting with Wine.
With Richard behind bars for the past five years, Jon thought he had moved on. But has he? With Richard back, Jon loses control. A darker side emerges and Jon finds himself, once again, addicted to the fatal drug—his ex.
For Richard, working out and warding off the advances of gay prison sex hasn’t done much for his mental instability.
Will Jon suffer the consequences of Richard’s downfall?
In Painting with Wine you’ll meet two men who just can’t live without each other. It’s an LGBT mystery thriller set in the cold, dark winter in a small town in Massachusetts. Let the intensity of this story warm you. It’s a love story gone wrong—and a discovery gone right.
You’ll be shocked by the conclusion.

This is a very thought provoking short novella. It is well written, plotted, and edited. Jon and Richard had met as young men, were together for years, experiencing the rich life until life overwhelmed Richard, he couldn't keep it together any longer, he acted out in many different ways, including attacking his husband Jon. So the story begins with Richard in prison for five years.I was amazed that Jon could move on with his life after such an intense relationship with Richard. It may have taken years but he moved on into another relationship. He has an adopted daughter and a sister and he is going to school. I admired his commitment and determination that life has more to offer. He is improving himself.
SPOILERS (To explain why this short story is thought provoking)
Jon still has feelings for Richard which is completely understandable. They spent a chunk of their lives growing up together, supporting, and being there for each other. What was so thought provoking is that even with the betrayals that Jon knew about, there was more to come. Just when you think it can't get any worse, it does. It is not an easy read, the way prison life affected Richard and how he changed and not for the better.. . As well as his finally recognizing his mental problems. Most don't. But Richard does and it's sad he isn't on his medicine when he meets up with Jon.
While I know a lot about bi-polar and depression, I don't know how realistic it was for Richard to switch his mental state back and forth in minutes. He'd be fine, then 'his eyes would go black' and he'd be unreasonable and have no conscience. Very unstable. I doubt that mentally unstable patients switch that fast. Usually when they're switched, all rational is gone. Completely. We don't know how bad Richard was before his incarceration. Obviously it's now worse, he's even more self centered.
It's really sad Jon and Richard couldn't treat the problem early in their relationship, before the stress and life became too overwhelming. It could have been a different ending. All this could have been avoided.
I was amazed Jon was able to bounce back once more, get his life in order, and come out ahead. In his situation, he spent years with a mentally disabled partner. That's life changing. I was left in hope that he could reconnect with his boyfriend, that Mark would wait for him. It'd be nice to have another novella that tracks Jon's life, see how things go, find out Mark's story.
I did wonder how old Jon was. . . I assumed late 30's or early 40's. Starting over at that age. Amazing. Not many do, not many get that opportunity or even think of starting over.
Then there was the way Jon addressed his daughter: "Why don't you help Uncle Marky get Dada's stuff." And she calls Jon 'Dada.' I know children aren't always portrayed well in a story. . . So if Richard was in prison 5 years and he was a dad to Susan, that means Susan is old enough to be in school and shouldn't be using such baby language. Or be talked to like that. She's what 7? Older? School age children shouldn't be encouraged to talk like that. Their friends would ridicule them. . .
This was an excellent introduction to his work as this is the first story I've read of his. - Dan's Wife

Painting with Wine edition by Rick Bettencourt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I couldn't for a minute identify with any of this. The whole thing was just awful. Skill in narration is not the author's strong suite.
Great story! Twists & unexpected turns! I read it twice to get all the details, as the story just sucked me in the first time & I couldn't wait to see what happened,
Some edge of your seat angst. This is a wonderful novella by Rick. I'll be sure to look at Rick Bettencourt's other books.
Fast paced excitement, with mystery, obsessive love, violence, surprise and hot sex. What's not to love? A very satisfying ending.
Relationships can be about love and support as well as being destructive and harmful. Luckily most of us aren't faced with as much destructiveness, or the encompassing need for forgiveness, of ourselves and others, as demonstrated in 'Painting with Wine.'
i finished Painting with Wine in one day and enjoyed it so much I bought two more of Rick Bettencourt's books. I'm tryng not to give spoilers, because it's a mystery, a love story and a thriller in one compact work. Tight plot, a refreshing lack of cliches and all the settings stand out, shown in concise detail. Rick is skilled at intense action and tender dramatic scenes. The people feel real, with contradictions, flaws and shadings.Dialogue is a big test for me, and decides whether I'll even continue reading. His characters speak with distinct, unforgettable voices, especially Richard. (his is a strong, vivid portrayal but I can't give more away)
We have all been addicted to the one love of our life. The one being the person that is so bad for you. You put yourself out there and do anything to be together whether it's wrong or just. They lie and manipulate you, using your love for them against you. Richard did really love Jon but he was all the above as well. Till the very end Jon loved Richard heart and soul but at some point we all realize that it's enough. We are better then this and deserve better. Jon needed to take back his life and get control of who he is and what he wants for his Daughter and himself. As emotional as it is in reality, you really feel the struggle of emotions that play through both men. Very good!!
