When Abney put his hands on the man's chest and suggested he return to the stands, the fan "ripped his coat open and showed me a badge and two pearl-handled revolvers." Most of all, however, Wild Friday Nights touches the heart. Coaches step in for boys with permanently-absent parents, but some of those boys must look for a ride home after a game in which they have played superb football. I picked up a copy of Mac Abney's new book on his career officiating at East Texas football games, and read it Thursday evening while Grayson was at Pee Wee football practice. It was a good read, and I really enjoyed the descriptions of the various small towns Mac travels to to officiate. But I could quickly see that something he told me Thursday was true - that the really good stories he couldn't tell because as soon as you knew the school, it would not be hard for residents to figure out precisely who the coach was (well, duh) and who the specific players were. So he's right - he's going to have to go into fiction to tell the really interesting stories!v

This book illustrates a dimension of Texas football not seen from bleachers. Very entertaining. I recommend it for sports fans and especially football fans. The story about Apple Springs was hilarious and the chapter about the game following the September 11th attacks brought tears. After reading this book, you might want to try on the stripes!
My husband and I read this book a few weeks ago while on vacation. It was wonderful...filled with anecdotal stories from Mac's years as a high school referee. It was so well written, yet you felt as though you were sitting across the room from the author while he colorfully told you about his experiences, each one teaching some life lesson or revealing an aspect of life in sports that had previously gone unnoticed. I think it should be required reading for every high school athlete. The chapter on refereeing the day Mac's father died was my favorite, though I loved the story about the player escorted by the compassionate coach, too. We are already ready for the sequel!
