Forever Betrothed Never the Bride Scandalous Seasons Book 1 edition by Christi Caldwell Romance eBooks

Each chapter begins with a random note from Lady Emmaline written to her betrothed while he's serving in the war. She wrote him a note every day from age 13 to 17 but never sent them. Lord Drake returns to England when she's 17 and spends the next three years completely ignoring her! Now at age 20, Lady Emmaline is getting tired of waiting for a betrothal that was agreed upon 15 years ago, when she was five and he was thirteen.

The notes provide a clever way for the reader to get to know Emmaline, her likes, dislikes and her nature. She's forthright, a little mischievous and extremely caring about other people, especially those who are less fortunate. The story opens with a chance meeting between Emmaline and Drake when she's protecting an old woman pushing a vegetable cart from the threats of a popinjay Lord. Drake is impressed and intrigued by her and begins to take notice of Emmaline for the first time. With the help of Drake's friend Sinclair, she continues to put herself in his path over the next month and their relationship takes on many new developments.

This is a moving story as we see Drake struggling with PTSD and his attempts to find normalcy in his life. On the outside, he's handsome, strong and confident so nobody would ever guess the battle within himself. The author seems to handle this with great sensitivity, but always with a great level of optimism too. My eyes might tear up on one page, and the very next page I was laughing at one of Emmaline's escapades or a witty repartee with her brother or Drake. The secondary characters of Sinclair, Emmaline's brother Sebastien and her best friend all add additional interest to this story. How will Drake react to another suitor courting Emmaline? Will Drake find the comfort he desperately needs in Emmaline's arms? How will Emmaline help him overcome his struggle? Overall this book is very uplifting and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Forever Betrothed Never the Bride Scandalous Seasons Book 1 edition by Christi Caldwell Romance eBooks Reviews

This is the story of Drake and Emmaline. Imagine being betrothed to a girl of five when you are only a 13 year old boy. That's what the fathers of these two children did! Although they did it with the best of intentions it had far-reaching consequences to these two children. It caused Drake to enlist in the army. It left Emmaline on the shelf for fifteen years, because Drake was determined to avoid her at all costs. Now at the age of twenty Emmaline has had enough, and she decides to take action to see if she should sever the betrothal contract or marry Drake. Drake is haunted by the horrors of war and has lived a reckless live trying to dull his torturous mind. Enter Emmaline who seems to be everywhere that he is and the fun begins.

Drake resents not having a choice in who he marries, but an attraction to her blooms as he gets to know her. The problem is that he believes he is flawed because of his nightmares of the war, and how he reacts when he has flashbacks. Are they both doomed to live unhappy lives alone? Can Drake be healed? Will Emmaline find someone who will love her? Read this story and fine out!

This story was very well-written and the characters were well developed. It has a wonderful blend of drama, emotion and humor. I found it very hard to put the book down from the moment I started reading it. I highly recommend it!
Emmaline and Drake, both children of dukes, have been betrothed since childhood. While Emmaline takes a more juvenile puppy love attitude towards it initially, Drake resents his tightly controlled life and joins the military in a time of war. When he returns home his resentment towards the arranged marriage is still present only now it is complicated by flashbacks of the battlefield. He spends three years ignoring his marital obligations indulging in gaming and whoring. For those three years Emmaline is caught in a holding pattern waiting for Drake, she can not be courted by other men and is delegated to wall flower status.

Emmaline tires of her position and decides to force Drake's hand either marry or sever the marriage contract. We watch the two finally get to know one another and Drake slowly realize how badly he has treated Emmaline. This is a trying story at times. While Emmaline is quite likeable the same can not be said of Drake. He comes across as selfish, elitist and at times cruel. You just can't help but wonder why Emmaline doesn't just cut her loses and find a more worthy man (like Lord Wexham)
Basically, this is another love story where the hero just can't be redeemed.
This is the first book I read by Christi Caldwell, and what a beautiful introduction to this very talented writer. Having recently re-read this book, I must share how amazing Drake and Emmaline's story is, and encourage you to read it.

Lord Drake is so angry at his father for planning out his life, and leaving him no choices. So he rebels by going off to war, only to return scarred and plagued by horrible nightmares and memories. Lady Emmaline is a strong and caring young girl, also with her life planned out by her father. She dreams of true love, but having been robbed of having a season and ignored by her betrothed, she feels that happiness is not for her unless she takes matters into her own hands. Such a wonderful story as Drake comes to know what a strong, caring and beautiful woman she is, and Emmaline realizes the kind of man he truly is when the walls he's built around his heart are torn down. It had me laughing, crying, and cheering them on throughout.
